IMPERATIVES  SENTENCES

Imperatives are verbs used to give orders, commands, warning or instructions, 
and (if you use "please") to make a request. It is one of the three moods of an 
English verb (indicative, imperative and subjunctive). (Los imperativos son verbos 
que se usan para dar órdenes, órdenes, advertencias o instrucciones y 
(si usas "por favor") para hacer una petición. 
Es uno de los tres modos de un verbo en inglés (indicativo, imperativo y subjuntivo).

USE OF THE IMPERATIVE

You can use the imperative to give instructions, commands, advice, or to invite: 
(Puedes usar el imperativo para dar instrucciones, órdenes, consejos o para invitar):

1. TO GIVE INSTRUCTIONS

§  Push the button

§  Turn left

2. TO GIVE COMMANDS

§  Stop saying nonsense

§  don't lie.

3. TO GIVE ADVICE

§  Go to hospital; you are ill

§  Tell her that you love her

4. TO INVITE

§  Please, come to the party

§  Have a drinK

Use of the emphatic do with the imperative

You can use 'do' before the imperative to emphasize what you want to say:

EXAMPLE:

§  Do write down your name.

§  Do think of our offer.

There are several distinguishable forms of the imperative in English: 
affirmative, negative, and exhortative, as well as the more cordial ways of expressing an order 
(Hay varias formas distinguibles del imperativo en inglés: afirmativo, negativo y 
exhortativo, así como las formas más cordiales de expresar una orden)
AFFIRMATIVE IMPERATIVES
This is the most common and direct form of the imperative. There is only second person
 singular and plural. It is formed by using the infinitive of the verb without the “to“.
(Esta es la forma más común y directa del imperativo. Solo hay segunda persona del 
singular y del plural. Se forma usando el infinitivo del verbo sin el “to”).

Hurry up or you’ll miss the show!

Switch the TV off.

Put the flour, milk, and eggs in a bowl and whisk until smooth.

NEGATIVE IMPERATIVES

FOR A NEGATIVE , USE DON´T

Don’t be late!

Do not go to work today.

Don’t keep opening the fridge! 

 

USE PLEASE  TOBE MORE POLITE

PLEASE PUT THE PLATES ON THE TABLE

USING THE IMPERATIVE FOR SUGGESTIONS… (USANDO EL IMPERATIVO PARA SUGERENCIAS…)

In some cases, the imperative can be used to give suggestions or to make proposals. 

In these cases, we have two constructions: (En algunos casos, el imperativo puede usarse para dar sugerencias o hacer propuestas. En estos casos, tenemos dos construcciones)

 

·         Let’s + infinitive verb without the “to (Exhortative Imperative)

Let’s not miss the train.

Let’s take a holiday!

·         Why don’t we + infinitive verb without the “to

Why don’t we go to the beach?

Why don’t you tell her the truth?

 

IMPERATIVE + PERSONAL PRONOUNS

In some cases, a personal pronoun can be added to reinforce the imperative value. 

But, be careful to not appear impolite. This verbal form is only used for a strong and 

decisive order.(En algunos casos, se puede agregar un pronombre personal para reforzar el valor imperativo. Pero tenga cuidado de no parecer descortés.

Esta forma verbal solo se usa para una orden fuerte y decisiva).
