TIME EXPRESSION FOR AND DURING

For: duration

We use FOR to talk about the length of time something lasts.

For is usually a preposition and sometimes a conjunction

We use for with a period of time to refer to duration (how long something lasts):

There’s a lovely open-air pool near us. We usually go there for a couple of hours in the evenings when it’s warm

For must be followed directly by 'a' or 'an' or by a number followed by a time noun. (year, month, week etc.)

(Usamos FOR para hablar sobre el tiempo que dura algo.

Porque suele ser una preposición y, a veces, una conjunción.

Usamos for con un período de tiempo para referirnos a la duración (cuánto dura algo):

Hay una hermosa piscina al aire libre cerca de nosotros. Por lo general, vamos allí por un par de horas por las noches cuando hace calor.

 

For debe ir seguido directamente de 'a' o 'an' o de un número seguido de un sustantivo de tiempo. (año, mes, semana, etc.)

For Example

  My father has been in Paris for six days.

  I haven’t seen you for a long time.

  I lived in San Francisco for ten years.

  We were on a vacation for a week 

DURING

We use DURING to say when something happens, if it happens in or over a period of time.

We use during before nouns and noun phrases to refer to when something happens over a period of time. 

During can refer to the whole time of the event:

Unlike "for" it’s a preposition that should be followed by either a noun or a pronoun.

 

(Usamos durante antes de sustantivos y frases nominales para referirnos a

cuando algo sucede durante un período de tiempo.

Durante puede referirse a todo el tiempo del evento:

A diferencia de "for", es una preposición que debe ir seguida de un sustantivo o un pronombre.)

For Example

  During my vacation, I witnessed a lot of amazing events.( Durante mis vacaciones, fui testigo de muchos eventos asombrosos.) 

  We can discuss this topic during the dinner. (• Podemos discutir este tema durante la cena.) 

  What happened during the blizzard? (• ¿Qué sucedió durante la ventisca?) 

  Your grandfather came during your absence ( Tu abuelo vino durante tu ausencia) 

-During can refer to something that happened while the main event was taking place. In such contexts, during means ‘at some unspecified point in time’ and is more common than in:

What was that noise I heard during the night, I wonder? or … in the night. (I heard a noise at an unspecified point in the night.)

One day, during the Second World War, her father just disappeared. (He disappeared at an unspecified point.) 

-(Durante puede referirse a algo que sucedió mientras se desarrollaba el evento principal. En tales contextos, durante significa 'en algún momento no especificado' y es más común que en:

¿Qué fue ese ruido que escuché durante la noche, me pregunto? o... en la noche. (Escuché un ruido en un punto no especificado de la noche).

Un día, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, su padre simplemente desapareció. (Desapareció en un punto no especificado.)
